What exactly does the visibility check examine?

The check examines your site across seven areas with more than 40 individual criteria. Each area carries a different weight in the overall result — AI visibility most of all, because that is where the biggest differences between websites arise today.

AI visibility (GEO/AEO)

28%

Whether ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews are allowed to read your site at all, whether you answer questions directly, and whether there is FAQ markup, a named author, a machine-readable modification date and evidenced figures.

Share of the overall result

Content & structure

18%

Page title, meta description, exactly one H1, an unbroken heading hierarchy, sufficient substance, the ratio of text to code and the readability of your sentences.

Share of the overall result

Security & data protection

16%

Encryption and redirects, remaining certificate validity, HSTS, Content Security Policy, clickjacking and MIME protection, referrer and permissions policy, cookie flags, mixed content, unencrypted forms, disclosed software versions, plus SPF, DMARC and CAA in DNS.

Share of the overall result

Discoverability

14%

Indexability, robots.txt, XML sitemap, canonical tag, the density of your internal linking and whether non-existent addresses respond cleanly with a 404.

Technical foundation

12%

Compression, browser caching, server response time, document size and render-blocking files in the page head.

Share of the overall result

Presentation & media

8%

Mobile display and whether zoom is locked, alt text, modern image formats, image dimensions set to prevent shifting layouts, font loading behaviour and the preview when sharing.

Why is classic SEO no longer enough today?

Because a growing share of all questions is answered without anyone clicking a search result. Someone who gets an answer from ChatGPT, Perplexity or a Google AI overview only sees your website if the system draws on it as a source and names it. A good position in the classic results list helps with that, but it does not guarantee it.

The difference lies in how the content is prepared. For classic search, what mainly counts is what a page is about. For generative systems, what also counts is whether a self-contained, verifiable statement can be lifted out of your text — and whether it is clear who stands behind it and when it was last reviewed. A page can rank third in Google and still never appear in AI answers, because it contains no quotable passages.

That is precisely why this check weights the AI signals most heavily. They are the area where most websites currently have nothing in place — and therefore the area with the widest gap between effort and effect.

How do AI systems decide which source to quote?

Put simply, along five questions. The check maps exactly those.

  1. Am I even allowed to read the page? If robots.txt locks out crawlers such as GPTBot, ClaudeBot or Google-Extended, everything else is beside the point. This block is in place more often than site owners realise — frequently inherited unintentionally from a template.
  2. Can I find a clear answer? Systems prefer passages that answer a question straight away rather than working up to it slowly. An opening of roughly 25 to 90 words that stands on its own can be carried over cleanly.
  3. Is the statement cleanly delimited? Headings phrased as questions, FAQ markup, lists and comparison tables provide clear units. Continuous running text without structure can hardly be quoted reliably.
  4. Who is behind it? A named author with visible credentials and a fully marked-up company with address, contact details and linked profiles turn a website into an identifiable source.
  5. Is this still up to date? Where two sources are equally good, the demonstrably more recent one wins. A machine-readable modification date is therefore a surprisingly effective lever.

What does my result mean?

The score is a weighted average of all areas. It is deliberately strict: a result around 70 is normal for a well-maintained website, not a warning sign.

Grading scale of the visibility check
Grade Points Assessment
A 90–100 A strong foundation. You are ahead of most of your market; it is only a matter of fine detail now.
B 78–89 Solid. The basics are right, but some effective levers are still unused.
C 64–77 Workable. Classic SEO mostly does its job, but the AI signals lack substance.
D 48–63 A lot is being left undone here. Several points are costing you visibility every day.
E 30–47 Clear gaps. Search and AI systems can only work with the page to a limited extent.
F 0–29 Critical. As a rule, something fundamental is blocking discoverability.

What happens after the check?

  1. The three biggest levers first. The report sorts your findings by impact and names the three heaviest-weighing points at the top. If your time is limited, that is exactly where to start.
  2. Handle the quick wins yourself. Response headers, alt text, titles and descriptions can usually be sorted out without outside help. Every point in the report explains what it is about and why it counts.
  3. Talk about the rest. Structured data, answer-first copy and entity maintenance are work. In a free intro call we go through your result and say honestly what is worth doing for your business — and what is not.

Frequently asked questions

What does the visibility check cost?

The check is free and complete. You need no account and no email address, and you get the full result immediately on the page — not only after registering. Nor is there a withheld "premium analysis": you see everything that is checked.

Are the results real or estimated?

Every single point is measured live. We call up your page server-side and evaluate the actual source code, the HTTP response headers, the TLS certificate, robots.txt, the XML sitemap, llms.txt, the 404 behaviour and public DNS records. Nothing is extrapolated, estimated or derived from averages.

Why is my result worse than with other SEO tools?

Because a great deal more is checked here and AI visibility carries the heaviest weight. Many free traffic-light tools test a dozen basics that every well-maintained website meets — which almost inevitably produces top marks. Our benchmark is a professional GEO/AEO audit with more than 40 criteria. Precisely those signals that decide visibility in AI answers today are still missing from most websites.

What is the difference between SEO, GEO and AEO?

SEO aims to rank as high as possible in the classic results list. AEO (answer engine optimisation) aims to supply the direct answer — in the featured snippet, for instance. GEO (generative engine optimisation) aims to get generative systems such as ChatGPT or Perplexity to draw on your page as a source and name it. The three overlap, but they need different signals.

Which page should I have checked?

Start with your home page — it shows the technical groundwork that applies to the whole domain. Then check one of your most important sub-pages, such as a service or product page. That is where you see whether your content, too, is prepared in a way that makes it quotable.

Is my data stored?

We do not store the check result and we do not build a profile of your domain. The address you enter is used for the retrieval and held briefly for a technical anti-abuse measure. Only publicly available information is evaluated — the same information every search engine sees.

Is the check a security or penetration test?

No, and that is deliberate. We only evaluate what your site delivers voluntarily anyway: response headers, certificate, source code and public DNS records. No passwords are tried, no hidden paths are searched and no vulnerabilities are actively exploited. A full security test belongs in a commissioned engagement with your written approval.

Can I fix the points found myself?

Many of them, yes. Response headers, alt text, titles and descriptions are manageable with a bit of technical understanding. It gets more involved with structured data, the answer-first preparation of your copy and entity maintenance — that is where the real work for AI visibility sits. If you want to know what is worth tackling first, we will go through the result together in a free intro call.

How often should I repeat the check?

After every major change to the website, server or content, otherwise roughly quarterly. A repeat is particularly worthwhile after a relaunch: that is when redirects, canonical tags or indexability are most often lost — mistakes that quietly cost visibility for months.

You have seen the result — what now?

We go through your report with you in 30 minutes, rank the findings by their impact on your business and tell you what visibility is realistically achievable. Free, with no sales pressure — and an honest no if the effort is not worth it for you.
