Short answer: Since 24 August 2026, OpenAI has been showing ads inside ChatGPT in Germany and 30 other European markets. Only people on the Free and Go plans see them. For most SMEs the bigger question is not the ad budget but whether they appear in AI answers at all.
ChatGPT spent years as an ad-free space. That era is over. OpenAI announced on 18 August 2026 that ChatGPT Ads would reach 31 European markets, and the rollout happened on 24 August. Germany is included. For anyone running marketing in a small or mid-sized company, this raises a question that goes well beyond adding another channel: if customers now prepare their buying decisions in conversation with an assistant, where exactly does your company show up in that conversation?
What changed on 24 August 2026
OpenAI frames the move as the step from pilot to global platform. The key points from its own announcement:
- ChatGPT Ads is available in 31 European countries, among them Germany, Austria, France, Italy and the Netherlands.
- Access runs first through the OpenAI Ads Solutions team plus agency and technology partners. A self-serve Ads Manager was announced for the third quarter of 2026 (this page: September 2026).
- Under OpenAI advertising policies, ads are clearly labelled and kept separate from answers, and advertising does not influence what ChatGPT says.
Search Engine Land adds that ads only reach people on the Free and Go plans, and that OpenAI has been building out the platform with conversion optimisation, geo-targeting, custom audiences and a measurement pixel (Search Engine Land, 19 August 2026).
Who actually sees the ads
This is where most debates go wrong. Paid tiers stay ad-free, and paid tiers are where a large share of professional usage sits. Anyone using ChatGPT daily for quotes, copy or analysis usually holds Plus, Pro or a business licence. Your ad is therefore more likely to reach a private researcher than a purchasing manager on a company account.
For consumer-facing businesses that is an opportunity. For classic B2B suppliers it is a reason not to reshuffle budget immediately, but to check organic visibility in AI answers first. We covered the groundwork in GEO and AEO: how to get cited by AI answers.
ChatGPT Ads, Google Ads and organic AI visibility compared
| Criterion | ChatGPT Ads | Google Ads (search) | Organic AI visibility |
|---|---|---|---|
| Access for SMEs | For now only via the OpenAI team, agency or technology partners | Self-serve, live in hours | No access needed, but content lead time |
| Control | Geo-targeting, custom audiences, conversion optimisation | Fine-grained via keywords, bids, assets | Indirect, via topics, evidence and crawlability |
| Reach | Free and Go plans only | Everyone searching | All plans, all assistants |
| Measurement | Pixel, conversions API, third-party measurement | Mature, including attribution | Laborious, via referrers and server logs |
| Lead time | Days to weeks through the partner process | Hours | Weeks to months |
| Effect after you stop | Ends immediately | Ends immediately | Persists |
A worked example: what a first test really costs
Take a window manufacturer with 30 staff, a 60-kilometre catchment area, an average order value of 8,000 euros and a 25 percent contribution margin, so 2,000 euros per order. The plan is a three-month test.
- Media budget: 1,500 euros per month, so 4,500 euros over the test.
- Agency setup and management: 900 euros one-off plus 400 euros per month, so 2,100 euros.
- Landing page and measurement setup: 1,200 euros one-off.
- Total: 7,800 euros for three months.
To break even, 7,800 divided by 2,000 gives 3.9, so four extra orders. At a 20 percent close rate on qualified enquiries that means 20 enquiries in three months, roughly seven per month. Whether that is realistic depends on demand in the catchment area. If you cannot estimate that number in advance, do not release the budget yet. Our ROI calculator helps you set the threshold for your own case.
For comparison: the same 7,800 euros put into content that gets cited in Google and in AI answers keeps working after the spend stops. That is not an argument against advertising, it is an argument for an honest side-by-side view. We broke the wider budget question down in What does AI cost a company.
The harder job: appearing in the answer itself
Ads sit next to the answer, not inside it. The sentence where ChatGPT actually names a supplier stays organic. If you are missing there, advertising buys you a seat beside the recommendation rather than the recommendation.
Three levers that measurably help
Clear evidence. AI systems prefer pages with checkable statements: prices with a date, figures with a source, concrete service descriptions instead of adjectives. Google makes the same point in its documentation on creating helpful, reliable, people-first content.
Clean structure. A direct answer in the first paragraph, details afterwards. Exactly the pattern this article uses.
Measurement. Without it, every claim about AI traffic is a feeling. How to make visits from ChatGPT and other assistants visible is covered in Measuring AI traffic.
Privacy and disclosure
Two things to settle with your legal adviser before you book. First, if you deploy the OpenAI pixel you are processing usage data on your own website and need a legal basis plus consent in your banner [check legally]. Second, advertising claims inside an AI chat are subject to the same fair-trading rules as anywhere else, including price statements and labelling [check legally]. A structured review of your data processing is what our GDPR check is for.
Your first four weeks
- Week 1: Find out whether and how ChatGPT names your company today. Ask ten typical customer questions and record the answers.
- Week 2: Close the biggest gaps on your website: price ranges, catchment area, references with numbers.
- Week 3: Set up measurement so you can separate assistant traffic from everything else.
- Week 4: Decide from the data whether an ad test makes sense. If so, get two quotes from partner agencies.
If you would rather run that sequence with support, our visibility check shows within days where you stand in search and in AI answers. Questions are welcome through the contact form. For the wider marketing picture, see AI in marketing.
Frequently asked questions
Can a small company book ChatGPT Ads directly?
Not yet. At launch, access runs through the OpenAI Ads Solutions team and through agency and technology partners. OpenAI announced a self-serve Ads Manager for the third quarter of 2026 (this page: September 2026).
Do all ChatGPT users see ads?
No. Ads appear only on the Free and Go plans. Plus, Pro and business licences stay ad-free, which noticeably shrinks the reachable audience in B2B.
Does advertising change what ChatGPT recommends?
OpenAI states that ads are clearly labelled, kept separate from answers and do not influence their content. Nobody outside the company can verify that, so treat organic visibility and paid placement as two separate questions.
Is the channel worth it for a regional business?
It depends on the catchment area. Geo-targeting exists, but reach within the ad-supported plans inside a 60-kilometre radius is limited. Set a clear break-even threshold, as in the example above, before you start.
What matters more, running ads or being found organically?
For most mid-sized businesses, organic first. A mention inside the answer carries more weight than an ad beside it, costs less over time, and survives the end of the budget.
